WANTED: Small women's road bike for new rider

A friend wants to try cycling and needs a bike. She's small (5'4"), so I'm guessing a 48cm or thereabouts might fit her, depending on the bike. She's a single mom and all that, so didn't want to drop a ton of cash for something she may or may not like. Her goal is to train for next year's MS 150 (probably the 50-mile option).
