Central City
The Central City Cluster (C6)
The Central City Cluster represents riders in Cincinnati Proper and our Internal Suburbs (e.g., Norwood). Our rides usually start somewhere within Cincinnati (see below) and use the least used urban roads possible either within the City or from the City into the country. Our basic purpose is to demonstrate that you can use your bike within the city and still see some beautiful country. Its ironic, but as our suburbs get more developed some of the best roads to ride on are the multi-laned urban roads, particularly on weekends and in the evenings when traffic has moved into the suburbs.
CCC Members who are also considered C6 members include 6 of the CCC’s League of American Bicyclists Certified Instructors (LCIs). So, if you are new to cycling ask for Glenn, Geoff, Greg, Scott, Big Dave or Jeni and they will help you get on the right foot.
The C6 now has 5 regular rides. These range from the dead flat (The biggest hill on the Monday night ride is the bridge over the River into Kentucky), to the extremely hilly (Big Dave’s Wednesday Hill Ride which goes out of its way to overcome the biggest of the Western Hills with climbs with grades over 20%). Several of the rides have multiple speed groups if enough folks volunteer to lead the rides. We have 2 rides on Sundays from the same place to accommodate 2 very different groups of cyclists, the slow and the fast. These are the Decaf and Espresso Rides, respectively. All of our rides require a signed waiver, helmets and lights when indicated in the ride announcement. Cluster leaders are Larry Bloomfield and Glenn Talaska
We are the Greenest CCC Cluster…..Our members are in the top 10 CCC commuters every year. We also participate in many of the all club rides by “riding to the Ride”: we meet in a C6 location and ride our bikes to the starting point of the CCC ride and then ride home again.
Weekly Rides
Sunday Decaf Ride: This is an easy ride for beginners or someone who wants to be social on a Sunday Morning. It leaves from the College Hill Coffee Company (CHCC, Hamilton at North Bend) and wanders on the top of Winton Hill without ever going into the major river/creek valleys. This means that there will be no huge climbs on this ride. 10-20 miles total and a very moderate pace. This is a no drop ride in every sense of the term. The ride is timed so that participant so both the Decaf and Espresso rides can meet for lunch at the CHCC afterwards. Contact: Jim Lindner
Sunday Espresso Ride: This is usually a fast and hard ride. It also starts and ends at the CHCC but it explores a much wider area canvas of the entire tri-state. Distances are from 40-80 miles and speeds average 15-18 mph including the hills. Depending on who shows and what they feel like, these can be very challenging rides. The rule is that if you think you can start with us you will not be left alone. So even if you cannot keep up with the racehorses who regularly show for this ride, you will always have a at least one riding companion. A social lunch at the CHCC always follows. Monday Night Ride: The Monday Night Ride starts and finishes in the north end of the Hartwell Kroger Parking Lot at 6:30 on Mondays. There are usually multiple speed groups from beginners to racers. The route is as flat as you can have in Cincinnati….it goes into Northern Kentucky and loops back through Downtown. This is our longest standing ride and if you haven’t had the pleasure of riding in a group through Downtown you are really missing something…..it can be a blast. Contact: Geoff Thielmeyer
Big Dave’s Wednesday Night Hill Ride: Its Wednesday Night for the Brave as we leave from Team Cycling and Fitness on Colerain at 6:15 pm and head for the Western Hills. Some of these rides are epics..the hills can have better than 20% grades and are known locally by such names as “Phlegm (1 and 2!)”, “Lungwood”, “Shee-its”, “Skull” “Eagle’s Beak” and Dry Heaves”. There are often 2 speed groups, but the rule is that all persons in the group will either wait at eh top of every climb for the slowest up or will cycle back down and repeat the climb with the slowest person(s). Ride leaders may only use Tasers, whips or prods on this ride’s namesake. Contact: Dave Riemenschneider
The Thursday Wanderers Ride: A year ’round, fair weather, casual 12-14 pace, 30+ mile, morning ride.
Location is different each week (that’s why we’re called the Wanderers) and the start time varies with the season and temperature. Check the CCC Ride Line for details on each week’s ride. Contact: Joe Obermeyer.
